AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP SOCIETY VOLUNTEERS PROVIDING

EARLY SPRING SPRUCE-UP FOR CHILDREN’S HARBOR OF PORTSMOUTH

AT 9 AM SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22

All our snow isn’t going to stop volunteers from the United Way African American Leadership Society (AALS) from helping revamp the learning areas for our partner agency, Children’s Harbor in Portsmouth. More than 25 volunteers will paint classrooms, clean the kitchen, move and install the employee break room and anything else the agency needs to benefit their children and employees.

Each volunteer is also donating a book so children can continue working on reading at home. Developing a love of reading at a young age is critical for their future success.

The African American Leadership Society is a group of dedicated United Way donors committed to improving education in areas of high need in our community. This year, AALS has agreed to a three-year commitment to provide tutors for computer-based learning at P.B. Young, Sr. Elementary School, the pilot project for our collective impact initiative, United for Children.

Being a part of AALS and United Way of South Hampton Roads, I know that I am helping to enhance our community in so many ways, which is only a fraction of the joy that I feel in volunteering every time I have the opportunity to lend a helping hand. Volunteering has become routine in our home... As volunteers we do not get paid; not because volunteers are worthless, but because we are PRICELESS! Volunteer, it is a gift for a lifetime.-Gina Owens, AALS Chair, TowneBank

Children’s Harbor, a nonprofit advocate for all children to have access to quality early care and education, includes:

  • Four award-winning child development centers
  • Nourishment through our USDA food programs
  • Training and development for those wanting to provide quality early care and education
  • Scholarships for families in need
