RIF Selects Children’s Harbor for Literacy Grant to Help South Hampton Roads Children Funds Raised through Macy’s Be Book Smart Campaign to Benefit Local Literacy Efforts   Portsmouth, VA  November 9, 2012—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit, selected Children’s Harbor to receive a $4807.00 grant for free book distributions and literacy activities benefitting the children and families enrolled in their Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Suffolk programs. The funds were raised during RIF’s 2012 Be Book Smart campaign in partnership with Macy’s.

It is with a heavy heart that I share tragic news of an infant death on Friday July 13, 2012. This is especially difficult for our staff because the child did attend Children’s Harbor, but was not in attendance the day of his death. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Children’s Harbor announced today that the South Hampton Roads center has received a $1 million Batten Endowment Challenge administered by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.  The gift is made possible by Jane Batten, a Virginia Beach philanthropist and wife of the late Frank Batten Sr., former chairman of Landmark Communications. It establishes an endowment fund at the foundation to benefit Children’s Harbor forever.

Children’s Harbor was awarded a $10,000 grant to fund their early childhood education activities. Children’s Harbor offers high quality, age-appropriate child care services for the children of working parents, according to each family’s ability to pay.
